Born in Tokyo. Graduate of the School of Arts, Letters and Sciences, Waseda University, Tokyo, Japan. Member of the Advisory Board to "Mujirushi Ryohin" since its founding. Professor Emeritus at Musashino Art University in Tokyo.
Founder and President of "SAGACHO EXHIBIT SPACE," Japan's first alternative space for the Arts (1983-2000). Introduced new talents in contemporary art both domestically and overseas. In the year 2000, curated "Shojo Toshi" (City of Girls) at the Japan pavilion of the Venice Biennale's 7th International Architecture Exhibition. Then, in 2004-2005, curated the "On Conceptual Clothing" exhibition at Musashino Art University Library and again in Kagoshima Prefecture's Kirishima Open Air Museum; in 2009, BankART Studio NYK (Yokohama) "Exhibition INTERVALLO: intervals in-between art, fashion, and design," and also the planning and direction of many art and design projects for public and private museums. Since 2011, actively working on "Sagacho Archives," a new challenge for the study, exhibit, talking and learning about, with archival activities, documents, and collections from the previous SAGACHO EXHIBIT SPACE; then turning it all into a showcase for students and the public.
Editor and author of books including ISSEY MIYAKE, East Meets West (Heibonsha, 1978), Kukan no Aura (Aura of Space) (Hakusuisha, 1993), and Fashion: Fashion as a form of Polyhedron (Musashino Art University Press, 2004), Japanese Coloring (Libro, 1981), JAPAN DESIGN (Libro, 1984). Major awards include the 1985 Mainichi Design Prize and the 1995 Japan Award for the Promotion of Art and Culture.
Born in Aichi prefecture, 1954. In 1977 entered IKKO TANAKA design studio. In 1988 established Hiromura Design Office.
