Talk "Irving Penn and Issey Miyake"
Mark Holborn has worked both with Irving Penn and Issey Miyake in book making projects as an editor and a writer. In the Introduction to Irving Penn regards the work of Issey Miyake, a globally published compilation showcasing the collaborations between Penn and Miyake, Holborn incorporates a discussion of the two artists' cultural backgrounds in his examination of their work together. Holborn, who characterizes the relationship between Penn and Miyake as a "Visual Dialogue," provided invaluable suggestions in the planning phases of this exhibition as well. In this talk, Holborn offers unique insights that could only come from someone who has followed the creative endeavors of Penn and Miyake over many years and possesses an intimate knowledge of Japanese culture. Penn and Miyake were able to transcend the artistic confines and contextual differences that separate photography and clothing design and find delight in the pursuit of purity of form. They also both found inspiration for new creations by turning their attention to a wide variety of different disciplines.
