●THIS PLAY!
21_21 DESIGN SIGHT will host an exhibition entitled THIS PLAY! that takes up the theme of the displays commonly seen in stores and show windows.
The term "display" has several meanings: "to make visible for others to see," "to raise up," and "to show in public," each referring to actions that stimulate communication between people and between people and things; and that also serve to lend a touch of color to our living space, raise our spirits, and provide us with cheerful information. The program explores the possibilities of display using the fashion world as a reference point, concentrating in particular on the sense of "excitement" that is perhaps the ultimate emotional response to these actions.
FINAL HOME designer Kosuke Tsumura has been charged with the job of the direction of the exhibition. Tsumura has gathered together a team of innovative fashion designers and artists whose job it will be to create installation displays that express the concepts behind their various labels.
Audiences can look forward to some truly "exciting" displays that offer opportunities for involvement at a level not usually possible in stores, including performances and workshops in which participants will be able to touch and even try on the pieces.

“SPACE PATCHWORK”
ⓒ minä perhonen
By creating a patchwork of his own textiles over signs, three-way corners, the sides of stairs, and other architectural details projected onto walls, the designer behind the minä perhonen label aims to draw attention to, or "display," spaces that are usually overlooked or forgotten. This exhibit will take the form of a "work in progress" in which the audience will be invited to take part in the patchworking.

This display by BLANK, the label established by sisters Miyoko and Kayoko Horiba, will explore the legend of kasabake, or the spirits of old umbrellas, through the use of stockings, tabi, and other items made from the label's own fabric. Old, discarded umbrellas will be given sexy mannequin legs and make a stunning reappearance as lampshades. The story will revolve around bringing light to people's lives. In addition to this humorous installation with its lineup of shapely-legged kasabake, the exhibit will also include a display featuring some of BLANK's early designs.

“Fukuwarai with a Twist”
Eri Utsugi (mercibeaucoup,)
The concept behind this display is fukuwarai, a children's game similar to pin the tail on the donkey in which blindfolded contestants pin parts of a face onto a blank face, but using clothes. mercibeaucoup, designer Eri Utsugi has come up with a set of clothes in the shape of eyes, mouths, noses, and other facial features especially for the occasion. Using these items (which are actually wearable), the audience will be invited to take part in a game similar to fukuwarai in which they will create a face on a giant board.

Using plastic artist Naro Tamiya's character Alien – Naro as its motif, this display uses bold colors and forms to depict the world of fashion label “me”. The setting is a visit to the new 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT building by the character Alien - Naro, who loves fashion, and the things that happen to him along the way.
During the program, workshops will be held involving the use of the raw wool and other materials used to make Alien – Naro’s body.
